In this quick capture I am trying to recreate the GeoBoil setup Simon Fiedler came up with here and here.

Though nothing beats the flexibility of Houdini, this workaround offers a lot of power and options for customization. Works on any object and can easily “boil” custom shapes if needed. The emission is based on the “matterwaves” node which means you can create shader or light based boiling patterns with ease.
